Through Doctor Kuvempu’s Eyes.

Act 1 <The screen shows the foggy and misty hills of Karnataka and zooms into a portion of the land where Kuvempu was born> Narrator: On December 29, 1904, Kuppali Venkatappa Puttappa, also known by his pen name Kuvempu, was born in Hirekodige, Koppa Taluk, Chikmagalur.  We request each of you to put yourself in this great poet’s shoes and reminisce about his journey through your own eyes. <Lights go off and come back on, signifying a blink> <A student walks in from the audience dressed as a young Kuvempu as the projector shows a pre-recorded, point of view video, of what the student can see> <The screen shows a green pasture where young Kuvempu is walking towards his mother, Seethamma, and Venkatappa are ploughing the field> Kuvempu: Appa, what are you and Amma doing up so early in the fields? Venkatappa: I’m sure you’ve heard the saying that an early bird catches the worm. Seethamma: Putta, your English teacher, Mr Moses, is coming all the way from Canara to teach you at home. Please greet and welcome him home. Kuvempu: Okay Amma.  <Just then, Venkatappa holds his chest, gasps for air, and falls in the field.> Kuvempu:  <Rushes to his father> Appa, Appa, what happened?! <Lights fade> Narrator: And just like that, with the passing of his beloved father, Venkatappa, a twelve-year-old Kuvempu received the baton and began to shoulder the responsibilities his mother, Seethamma, gave him. Act 2 <Kuvempu sits in a library surrounded by books and reads> Narrator: Kuvempu internalised his deep feelings about his father’s passing through a little outlet known as literature. He extensively read Wadsworth and Keats. Thereby gave him his deep interest in the art form. <Fade> <Lights dim to depict a flashback sequence> Kuvempu: Heru, tell me, do you think that art is long, and time is fleeting? <Mr Moses ponders, and his lips curve into a smile> Maybe. Mr Henry Wadsworth certainly thinks so. <Kuvempu learning English on sand from Mr Moses> <Lights flicker> A frozen frame of young Kuvempu winning first in elocution.  <Fade> <Lights come back on to signify present day> <The scene transitions to an older Kuvempu sitting in his Kupali house at Sahyadri Hills, reminiscing about his past with a smile> <The song Kannadada Kuladevi plays in the background> <Fade> <Kuvempu bids adieu to Mr Moses, wears a school uniform, and goes to Thirthahalli to further his studies> Narrator: Kuvempu began his poetic work in English, a language in which he felt most comfortable. One of his pieces was shared with James Cousins, an Irishman, who was immensely impressed by his poetic masterpieces. Kuvempu: It’s an absolute honour to meet you. James Cousins: I can proudly say that I’m one of your biggest admirers. But I would love your prose and poems even more if they were expressed in your mother tongue. And like Rabindranath Tagore, your authenticity will not get lost in translation. And attain international acclaim. <Kuvempu thinks self-critically> James Cousins: I didn’t say that to dishearten you; you are meant for greatness, there’s no doubt. But Indian languages, much like your native clothing, accurately describe feelings and emotions that the Western way simply waters down. Kuvempu: <Ponders in thought> Narrator: This profound moment changed the course of history for Kuvempu. <Lights flicker> <An older Kuvempu acts as a character in his play Birugalli> <Kuvempu sits in his Udayaravi house and rolls back the years fondly> Narrator: Kuvempu did his final years of schooling at Wesleyan and then his master’s degree at Mysore University, where he later became a professor. <Lights brighten> <Kuvempu writes with Rabindranath Tagore> Narrator: Kuvempu enjoyed writing children’s books and novels; his work on Bommanahalliya Kindarijogi is still taught in schools. <Lights flicker> Narrator: He even made a movie along with director Girish Karnad, named Kanooru Heggadathi. <Lights brighten> Narrator: Kuvempu then wrote an epic named Shri Ramayana Darshanam.  <Lights fade> Narrator: This poet, playwright, novelist, and critic spent many years in meditation. As a freethinker, he was more of a universal being who did not serve the royalty.  <The spotlight points at Kuvempu> Kuvempu: Fame is an evil that silently follows the successful.  Narrator: In 1955, he became the principal of Maharaja College and the vice-chancellor of Mysore University. <The Bhavageethe – Sundara dina inna sundara vana playin in the background, and crescendos> Narrator: He tirelessly worked to unite Kannada-speaking folks of India. This Rajyotsava, let’s take a moment to remember and honour the Rashtrakavi who won the first Jnanpith Award, Karnataka Ratna, Padma Vibushan, and coined the state anthem Jaya Bharata Jananiya Tanujate himself, Dr Kuvempu.

Why so fidgety?

There’s a reason why medicines aren’t to be toyed with. This is what happens when you do otherwise.  In early 2017, a wise person with an internet connection started a meme around the “fidget spinner” – a seemingly innocent little toy that keeps spinning for around 120 seconds with one, simple stroke. Being lightweight and very pocket friendly, the peculiar toy quickly rose to popularity as the perfect toy for folks that constantly need to fidget, but didn’t know they had to.  With enough memes and even more internet savvy folk who buy into just about every trend there is on the internet, fidget spinners rapidly grew from the subject of memes to one of the world’s most loved and hated toys by users alike. But, as is too often the case, what seemed like an innocent enough toy wasn’t nearly as innocent as it seemed. The fidget spinner increasingly turned people anti-social, just like how smartphones did in the 2010s. People started using them at dinner tables, professional meetings, their doctor’s appointments, their own weddings, and just about anywhere one could think of – until a point where the world stopped talking to each other, obsessing over their fidget spinners at the cost of their health and sanity. Economies turned to shambles as the fidget spinner spread like an uncontrollable virus, destroying the bonds of human connectivity just as diseases destroy physical health. There was no stopping it. Once hooked, there’s no leaving one’s fidget spinner at any cost. Doing so would cause aggressive withdrawal symptoms, including increased aggression, arrhythmia, hypertension, manic symptoms, and eventual death.  How did this seemingly innocuous toy turn so virulent? Recent research suggests that the fidget spinner was actually created as an aid for patients with ADHD (attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder), and was showing highly promising results in the management of ADHD symptoms, with no side effects. But there was a catch. The fidget spinner was never meant to be used as a toy, and when used in the wrong hands can cause a highly advanced form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder.  But there is still hope. While millions of people on the planet are severely affected by some form of the disease, there remain an obstinate few who refused to buy into the trend of the fidget spinner. And while the whole world has turned into fidget spinner zombies, these brave people are relentlessly trying to create a cure for this illness, but to no avail so far. And you are one of them, in India. Only about 2,000 people in the country remain unaffected by the illness, and you are the Resistance’s last hope. Their chosen leader. In the days that follow, you will be put to the test as you work with the Resistance to restore the world to normalcy. Clock’s spinning.  ——- Note to participants: The rounds that follow for the remainder of Cipher 2017 will be set in this world, and based on this story. The business that you create in round 1, will be carried through for the remainder of the day, through all rounds. You are not allowed to change your business or product offering at any time during the fest. It is advisable to keep a copy of this text at all times for your reference through the day.

How to write great headlines.

It’s no small matter that your words sell before the product sells.  Keeping that in mind, only a smart company can realize that the headline is their fishing net; the harpoon they need to build their brand and sell their product – much before the rest of the advertisement can even be considered. David Ogilvy, hailed by many as the Father of Advertising, summed it up perfectly in this one quote: “On the average, five times as many people read the headline as read the body copy. When you have written your headline, you have spent eighty cents out of your dollar.” Studies show that eight out of ten people only read your headline. So, let’s rephrase the statement. Your headline sells before your product sells.  Here are four tips for writing a genius headline for your product: 1. Keep it simple, stupid. Another classic from David Ogilvy himself, the KISS rule pleads with you to strip the fluff, stamp out the buzzwords, and sell the product. Conciseness in length, clarity in meaning, and coherence in the structure are the tenets of a great headline. Tricks and shock-value headlines fly past your audience’s heads. 2. Tell a story. People are beguiled by narratives and characterization, whether they like it or not; and your headline is your grand opening statement. Your audience can read as much as you’d like them to about your product, provided your headline features a statement that shrewdly crafts the first thread of a superbly laid out narrative; one that ends with a successful sale.  3. Sell your product. And sell only. Everything your headline says should be engineered towards a sale; nothing more, nothing less. Oftentimes, copywriters get so lost in trying to craft a creative headline that they forget the primary objective of the entire campaign itself is to sell a product. If people refer to a headline as ‘creative’, the ad has failed. Write to sell and in doing so, write well. 4. Research matters. Don’t sell something your product can’t live up to. Over-the-top claims and eye-catching headlines are too many to count in an aggressive market that is hell-bent on high sales. Dedicate yourself to understanding the product you are advertising. Find your narrative and niche in it, then shout it out for the world to hear in your well-researched headline.  A great headline is the stepping stone to a great sales week, month, or even a year for your organization. So, choose your words carefully. And if you’re too busy to care for the craft of creating spectacular headlines, leave your cares at the door of Xnap Creative. Our team of highly dedicated copywriters will write your brand and product to perfection – word to word. Get in touch with us today!
