Clapping Rhythms for Dadra and Tritaal

1. Dadra:

  • Structure: Dadra is a slow, 6-beat cycle (6 maatras) divided into two sections:
    • Khali: 3 beats (dhin dhin dha)
    • Theka: 3 beats (dha tin tin)
  • Clapping Pattern:
    • Right hand: Clap on “dha” of each beat
    • Left hand: Clap on “tin” of the second and third beats in the Theka

Here’s how it would sound:

(Right hand) dha dha dha, dha tin tin
(Left hand)       --      X X

2. Tritaal:

  • Structure: Tritaal is a moderately paced, 7-beat cycle (7 maatras) divided into four sections:
    • Tin: 2 beats (tin tin)
    • Dhant: 3 beats (dha dhin dha)
    • Dhin: 2 beats (dhin dha)
  • Clapping Pattern:
    • Right hand: Clap on “dha” of each beat except the first “tin” in the Tin section
    • Left hand: Clap on the second “tin” in the Tin section and the first “dha” in the Dhant section
